La canción tuvo tanto éxito en su día que el rapero rodó varios anuncios para distintas marcas (Toyota, Pepsi, etc…) y la frase Stop…Hammertime fue el grito de guerra de más de un equipo (los Bad Boys de Detroit Pistons lo utilizaban, por ejemplo). Lo que no sabe tanta gente es que la base rítmica de la canción pertenece a Super Freak (1981) de Rick James.

MC Hammer consiguió su nombre de cuando jugaba al beisbol, por su parecido con el jugador Hank Aaron, conocido como “Hammerin’ Hank”. Algunos miembros de su equipo de béisbol ayudaron a financiar la carrera rapera de MC Hammer, y tras su primer éxito, el rapero empezó a aparecer en la MTV y en varios programas americanos llevando los ridículos pantalones que posteriormente serían su seña de identidad junto a sus frenéticos bailes. Todavía se le recuerda con agrado…

Fue precisamente el baile el que le llevó a realizar una gira impresionante en la que llevaba un montón de bailarines acompañándolo. MC Hammer estaba tan orgulloso de la gira que la mayoría de los bailarines eran amigos suyos, por lo que de esta forma compartía su riqueza con sus amigos y devolvía en parte los favores recibidos al principio de su carrera. El problema es que la gira resultó tan costosa que cuando terminó a MC Hammer no le quedaba ni un duro y ya no fue capaz de sacar otro éxito como ese…
